Grant School Holiday for Tibetan Losar New Year

The Issue

I am part of a vast community of vibrant individuals who, along with their families and friends, celebrate Losar - the Tibetan New Year. This celebration is also upheld by people from Nepal and Bhutan, and within the diverse Asian diaspora worldwide. We believe this celebration is as essential as the New Year celebrations recognized by many other cultural traditions and deserve the same respect and acknowledgement.

The annual Losar celebration is far more than just ringing in a new calendar year. It is an opportunity for us to honor our ancestors, bring the community together, and renew our commitments to peace and harmony for the year ahead. Losar has a deep cultural significance for Tibetans, Nepalese and Bhutanese people, creating bonds between generations and reinforcing our unique cultural heritage.

There are estimates that around 6 million people worldwide celebrate Losar every year (Source: Archives of Traditional Music). In acknowledgement of this significant portion of the population, a school holiday on this day would be an important symbol of recognition and respect for our traditions.

We acknowledge that every tradition and culture have unique celebrations that are important to them. However, recognizing Losar is not just about one day off school. It's about creating a more inclusive environment that celebrates diversity. This petition is not merely for a holiday but for enriching cultural understanding. This will also contribute towards global cultural diversity and inclusivity, establishing a sense of belonging for our young children.

Please sign this petition to grant a school holiday for the Tibetan Losar New Year. Together, we can spread awareness and foster a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural diversity in our global community.
