Melquain Jatelle Anderson was murdered in 2017 at a bus stop.  He was denied a Posthumous Degree because of minimum credit requirements despite having a 3.5 GPA. Mel's law will require the SUNY and CUNY boards of trustees to establish a policy for the awarding of posthumous degrees; requires such policy to waive any remaining credits for students who are killed and would otherwise have been eligible for graduation had they been able to complete their academic career.
