Through my work in the Paralowie community, I've witnessed first hand how limited access to Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medicines affects families, seniors, and individuals with chronic disease and disabilities. For many, obtaining these essential medications means facing unnecessary challenges and hardship because Paralowie is currently served by only one PBS-approved pharmacy. This lack of local options places an undue burden on residents, forcing many to travel longer distances, which can be particularly difficult for those with mobility issues or limited transportation options.

Paralowie is a vibrant community situated in South Australia, within close proximity to the bustling Paralowie Village Shopping Complex, strategically positioned near roads traversed by approximately 60,000 vehicles daily. This locale is not only convenient for residents but also for the many visitors who pass through, making it an ideal location for another pharmacy approved to offer PBS medicines.

Granting PBS approval for the Paralowie Village Discount Pharmacy is essential for ensuring equitable and convenient access to necessary healthcare services. This addition would alleviate some of the current strain on the local pharmacy and provide a vital resource for families, the elderly, and those with disabilities in our community.

Granting PBS approval would:

• Provide convenient and equitable access to essential medicines

• Reduce travel burdens and support vulnerable residents’ health

• Strengthen the local health network in a high-traffic, growing community

We respectfully call upon the Hon. Minister for Health to approve this request, correcting this imbalance and allowing the community to thrive with better access to PBS medicines.
