Grant Optional Parking At UCSB To UCSB Students Living In Isla Vista

The Issue

Backstory

UCSB admits more students than they have housing for. Due to this, thousands of UCSB students are forced to live in the neighboring town of Isla Vista because they were not provided housing by the school. Isla Vista is also not big enough to house all of these students and is extraordinarily expensive leading to students sharing rooms/houses with an absorbent amount of people, living in garages, or even living in their cars.

Why is this an issue?

Due to the thousands of students living in the small town of Isla Vista, it is very difficult to get parking. A lot of cars are forced to park in red zones, block sidewalks, or even block others into their driveways. This is leading to a lot of cars being damaged, students getting tickets they cannot afford, and students not being able to leave for work due to being blocked in. Not only are cars being damaged by other cars, but a lot of cars also get broken into as well.

Why is now the time to act?

The parking issue in Isla Vista is only going to get worse while UCSB continues to admit more and more students that they are not able to house. I am not asking for the school to give free parking, but to give students the option to pay for parking passes to park on campus or in the empty lots by the soccer field.

A minimum thing to ask UCSB for would be to house their students who pay thousands of dollars to attend. However, since they cannot do this, I am asking for below minimum and am asking for them to at least provide optional parking to their students. This will lessen the stress of finding off-campus housing, lessen the stress of finding parking, lessen the stress of getting tickets, lessen the stress of getting cars damaged or broken into, and lessen the stress of getting blocked in.

Please act now and sign this petition to help UCSB grant their students below the bare minimum of parking.
