Grant Justice for Imam Mohamed Hassan Adam
The Issue
The murder of Imam Mohamed Hassan Adam on December 22, 2021, in Columbus, Ohio, has caused immense physical, psychological, and economic harm because his absence left a vast void in thousands of lives.
Throughout the heart of Ohio, for the last two decades, Mohamed was a force of compassion, an example of service to the community, assisting anyone in need. He was a humble soul, and his efforts to help others made him a hero to all who knew him.
One of Imam Mohamed's favorite phrases was "aspire to inspire before you expire." His actions embodied this motto. In addition to being a respiratory therapist, father, and husband, he was a beloved Imam who inspired good deeds and spread kind words wherever he went. For example, he regularly raised funds for orphans and personally helped destitute individuals obtain employment and housing. He raised awareness and worked to reduce stigmas surrounding mental health issues. He ran a program to educate Columbus youth about the dangers of drugs and gang violence and the importance of community service. He established a food pantry and delivered hot meals to families and the homeless during the pandemic.
As an Imam, he commanded immense respect in the Muslim community, providing personal and spiritual counseling and mentoring youth. He founded multiple Islamic Centers in Columbus. Each year during Ramadan, he fed hundreds each night after long days of fasting to meet their religious obligations. He also cofounded religious outreach groups, including AskAMuslim.com and the Islamic Association of North America (IANA), a Minneapolis-based nonprofit group. He bridged gaps between communities and engaged with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim organizations to improve interfaith relations and encourage local civic engagement. The world has lost a beautiful soul.
Imam Mohamed's murder is a terrible loss to the entire interfaith community and has deeply affected approximately 60,000 Somali people in Columbus. The murder has shattered any sense of safety the community once felt, and many are scared to go out after dark. Young children Imam Mohamed used to teach live in fear and struggle to comprehend his absence. Thousands more have lost their spiritual advisor, counselor, brother, and friend.
The defendants accused of committing these crimes while they were on post-release control. Both defendants have a history of criminal conduct involving deadly weapons and pose a substantial risk of serious harm to the community. Past punishment has not deterred their lawbreaker activities. For the safety of our community, I ask that you deny them any form of release or bond pending trial. I also ask that they receive the maximum penalties permitted by law at the time of sentencing.
Imam Mohamed will forever live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched with his selfless acts. We will work tirelessly to keep his legacy alive and continue his good works. However, before the community can begin to heal, we need justice, accountability, and punishment for this senseless act of violence.
We petition to ask that Judge Phipps hold John Wooden and Isaiah Brown-Miller – who stand accused of the kidnapping, robbery, and murder of our beloved Imam Mohamed Hassan Adam – face swift justice and severe punishment. This case is not ordinary Imam Mohamed is not a typical victim. He was a transformative and compassionate leader loved by the local, state, national, and international interfaith communities.
