Grant ID cards to children of legally employed parents in Malta

The Issue

Do you miss your children? Do you dream of having them with you here, safe and cared for?
Every parent wants their child close, protected, and given the chance to grow in dignity.

Many families have come to Malta searching for a better future: safety, education, stability. Parents work legally, contribute to society, and enroll their children in compulsory schooling, as required by law. And yet, too many children are still denied something as basic as an identity card.

Without it, these children cannot travel to visit family abroad. They are cut off from grandparents, cousins, and loved ones. They cannot access services essential to their well-being; from healthcare to transportation, services that every child needs to grow and thrive.

This is not just an inconvenience. It is a denial of basic rights. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child makes clear that every child has the right to identity, education, healthcare, and family life. Malta’s current policies contradict these principles and place innocent children in a state of exclusion and isolation.

For my own son, who is just 8 years old, this has become a painful reality. After Identity Malta denied him an ID card, I have been waiting for over a year in appeal court. Meanwhile, my son continues to suffer - isolated, unable to travel to see his family.

Granting residence and identity cards to children of legally employed parents is not only a matter of paperwork - it is a matter of justice, compassion, and humanity. It is an administrative step that can change lives, give children stability, and allow them to integrate fully into Maltese society.

We, as parents, call on the Maltese government to act. To recognize that these children deserve the same rights and opportunities as others. To ensure that no child is left without an identity.

Let us demand justice and equality for our children.
Let us make sure they grow up with the identity, healthcare, education, and family life they deserve.
