Grant Emancipation to Aurora Gonzalez
Grant Emancipation to Aurora Gonzalez
The Issue
I am a student in Warren, TX, about to graduate, with a desire and necessity to join the workforce. However, my current legal status is a barrier to this new phase of life. My mother has a heart condition, compromising her ability to work as an unforeseen attack could jeopardize her and those around her. This dire personal circumstance places the onus on me to support our family.
Unfortunately, certain job requirements necessitate having full legal rights over oneself - the power I currently lack due to my minority status. I aspire to take on this concomitant responsibility, abide by these job requirements, and make a difference in my life as well as in my mother's life.
Current Texas law typically permits emancipation at the age of 16, provided the minor can prove they are self-supportive and can handle their affairs (Texas Family Code, 31.001). However, these laws are often restrictive, hindering young, ambitious adults like myself who need this legal status prior to graduation.
