The Issue

Charles Pritchett has been incarcerated for the past 20 years, serving a sentence of 36 years to life. This petition calls for his commutation, highlighting his journey towards rehabilitation and his profound impact within the prison community.

Charles is a combat veteran who has transformed his time in prison into a journey of growth and self-improvement. He has actively participated in numerous self-help classes and rehabilitation programs, including R.E.A.C.H., Anger Management, and Domestic Violence Prevention, Insight, and Criminal Thinking.  Furthermore, he has also taken courses in financial management and founded a Non-profit Our Better Project Inc. focusing on a self-help program inside the institution to not only help himself but others. As a member of the first cohort of Peer Support Specialists, he has been instrumental in providing mentorship and support to his fellow inmates, using his experiences to guide others towards positive outcomes in their lives. This initiative is a testament to his dedication to self-betterment and his commitment to giving back to society.

These efforts showcase Charles's dedication not only to his personal rehabilitation but also to the betterment of the prison community. His active involvement and leadership skills have not gone unnoticed and should serve as a considerable factor in reevaluating his sentence for commutation.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, inmates involved in educational or vocational training programs are significantly less likely to return to prison upon release. Charles's consistent efforts to engage in and lead such programs suggest that he is an exemplary candidate for commutation. He has shown that he is prepared to reintegrate into society and contribute positively.

The time has come to recognize and reward the positive transformations and contributions made by individuals like Charles. Granting him commutation would not only acknowledge his efforts but also reinforce the belief in rehabilitation and second chances.
