Grant Citizenship to Abdullah Ashraf — A Bondi Hero
The issue
My friend Abdullah Ashraf is an extraordinary individual who has demonstrated immense courage, selflessness, and commitment to community service. Having been in Australia as an international student for 8 years, Abdullah studies law, politics, and philosophy. Despite his demanding academic schedule, he has volunteered with Vivid Sydney and Sydney Airport in the past, and for the past year has been a dedicated volunteer with the Aboriginal Legal Service. He is a beautiful human being who is always striving to bring joy to others’ lives.
During the tragic Bondi shooting in December 2025, Abdullah exemplified heroism of the highest order. Faced with the immediate option to flee, he instead chose to stay and help the victims. He first went to the aid of a police officer who had been shot. He then ran to a woman who was with her two young children, applying pressure to her wounds, holding her hand, and staying with her to keep her calm, all while making sure her children were safely sheltered behind a car and later moved off the scene to safety. He then went to help a young man who had also stepped in to help others, but who tragically lost his life. Abdullah placed himself in harm’s way, prioritising the lives of others above his own safety. His bravery and compassion saved lives that day, echoing the actions of another hero Rehmat Pasha, who was recently granted residency by the government.
Granting Abdullah Ashraf citizenship not only acknowledges his remarkable actions but also enriches our nation with someone who has already proved his willingness to put Australia first. It would send a powerful message that acknowledges the contributions of those who selflessly serve our community.
Australia has a proud tradition of rewarding courage and sacrifice. Just as others have been recognised for their extraordinary deeds, Abdullah deserves the same acknowledgment.
