Grant Agricultural Zoning Rights to Legacy Farmers

Grant Agricultural Zoning Rights to Legacy Farmers

The Issue

In 2000, my mother, Kimberly Bucciarelli, embarked on a passionate endeavor by purchasing our family farm in New Boston, Michigan, with dreams of creating a sanctuary for horses and livestock, along with therapeutic activities for the community. Her sudden passing in 2007 left me, at just 16 years old, to shoulder the responsibilities of the farm and maintain the dream she once cherished. For over two decades, the farm has been not only a home but a place of healing, learning, and growth.

However, since 2022, the tranquility of our farm's existence has been disrupted by new neighbors, leading to harassment and unjust targeting by local authorities. Despite our long-standing presence and the positive impact we've had, we face challenges that threaten the continuation of our farming life-style and the contributions the farm makes to the community.

This situation sheds light on a critical issue faced by many farmers in New Boston, Huron Township, and beyond. Farmers like us, who have been sustaining the land for 20 years or more, must be recognized and protected through agricultural zoning rights. It is essential to "grandfather in" these farms to safeguard our traditions and livelihoods from new zoning laws or neighborhood disputes.

Granting automatic agricultural zoning rights to legacy farms is not only a way to honor years of service but also ensures that farms like ours can continue to operate without fear of losing rights or facing legal battles. This is a plea for fairness, stability, and the preservation of farming heritage.

Supporting this petition means supporting families who are the backbone of local agriculture and ensuring that new policies do not undermine their contributions or endanger their future. By signing, you stand with us in our effort to secure zoning rights for new Boston's treasured legacy farms, protecting them for generations to come.
