Grant a single PE credit to those in North Central's JV & Varsity Showchoirs (Read Update)

The Issue

North Central High School requires 2 PE credits per person, with at least one from a semester long PE class in school or summer school. A second PE credit can also be gained through playing a sport, JROTC, or marching band... but not varsity showchoir. For the many students who devote their time to either Counterpoints or Descants, they are unable to participate in winter sports, due to their competition season where they do competitive singing and dancing, requiring rigorous practice for hours. And although it takes the place of a winter sport, it doesn't count as a PE credit, so those who could potentially want to do a winter sport for a PE credit, they are unable to. One of the biggest concerns is Marching Band counting but not CP or Descants. This rule is acknowledging these physical performing activities but not another, which is inequitable. It's shocking how many students AND teachers disagree with the current PE credit policy and how varsity show choir is effected, but never speak out. It's confusing as to what requirements something like marching band meets, but not showchoir? Same goes for sports, there's no reason CP and Descants shouldn't be considered sports. That may sound silly, but it's true. It a rigorous activity involving physical competition. For the equity of North Central High School and fairness to it's students, Counterpoints and Descants counting as a PE credit should be highly considered and reviewed.

Quote From NC Descants Maddie Melton: "I’ve been in show choir for the past four years I’ve been in high school, and I had to take summer gym and regular PE which in my opinion we were less active in those classes then we are in show choir. The fact that it’s not considered as a PE credit with the amount of exercise we do at rehearsals, and while performing is absurd to me. If marching band can get a credit for PE so can show choir."
