The Issue

Join us in urging Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger to Grant a Conditional Pardon to Danita Corbin.

My name is Danita Corbin. I am a 54 year old Black woman and I came from a background where abuse and molestation was the norm. I remember a point where I just wanted to grow up and put distance between me and the abuse. My mother ended up raising three girls on her own and did not know what was happening. She was in an abusive marriage. When I left, I was not just running from the abuse and molestation, I was running from myself. I did not know my worth, who I was, nor which direction in life I was headed in. I ended up choosing what/who chose me. Which was an unhealthy lifestyle and relationships.

All of this may have faded my past memories yet created new unhealthy present memories. I was a train heading for a wreck. So ended up at the age of 29 being involved in a crime where a man's life was taken. I may not have been the one who did the actual murder, but I was there until I was arrested because my ex-partner claimed I stole his car. I was scared and protected my son when my co-defendant tried to force him to go along with him to get gasoline.

In no way am I claiming I did not deserve to go to prison. However I have been in prison for 28 years. I was only 29 years old when I first came to prison and I am now 54 years old. Because I was sentenced to life plus 30 years in prison without the possibility of parole, I will likely die in prison if something does not change. The only reason why I received this much time was because I rejected a plea agreement from the prosecutors for a lesser charge and sentence and opted for a jury trial and because my co-defendant, Benjamin Hammonds, falsely claimed I was the mastermind of this murder.

So I ask that you sign this petition which will be attached to my application for a conditional pardon where I am seeking to get my sentence commuted to 43 years in prison which is the same sentence Hammonds received. Your support can help me return home to my family and community. I thank you for your love and support.
