Ban Greyhound Racing In Queensland Now
The issue
On July 7, 2016, Mike Baird announced his Government would put an end to the cruel greyhound racing industry in NSW. This decision came after a special commission of inquiry found that more than 50,000 greyhounds - nearly half all the dogs bred for racing - are killed because they're deemed not competitive enough to live. Baird described the report as "chilling...horrific".
The NSW report concluded that the industry is incapable of reform as the horrendous cruelty was so wide spread and common practice, and, despite having several years and ample opportunity to reform, they have failed to do so. A report compiled in Queensland was also quite damning about the practices here, and those unimaginable acts of cruelty are still continuing in Queensland.
A shocking report compiled by Animals Australia and aired by Four Corners ABC in early 2015 revealed the systemic culture of cruelty against Greyhounds as well as other animals including rabbits, kittens, chickens, possums and piglets used daily for live baiting.
The industry claims to be compiled of predominantly responsible owners who love their dogs. If this is the case, why are that majority of Greyhounds bred every year in Australia killed, many inhumanely, because they're deemed too slow, or just not good racing material? And most of them under 4 years of age.
Grace Grace, Racing Minister for Queensland, and Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland, have the power to join Mike Baird in putting an end to this horrific industry in our state. They could save thousands of dogs from early death and terrible cruelty, not to mention the animals used in live baiting. And prove at the same time that doing the right thing is more important than appeasing the cruelty-for-profit racing and gambling industries.
If NSW can take this step, Queensland can too. Minister Grace and Premier Palaszczuk, it's time to end greyhound racing in our beautiful state.
