According to a study by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), preparedness is the key to reducing casualties and injuries during earthquakes. Yet, many students remain vulnerable simply because they lack the basic necessities to survive when disaster strikes. If an earthquake happens while we’re in school, will we be ready? Will we have the essentials needed to stay safe while waiting for rescue?  

The L.I.F.E. (Lifesaving Items for Earthquake) Bag is more than just a backpack—it’s a survival kit that can make the difference between life and death. It contains flashlight, a whistle, a first aid kit, and other critical supplies that can help students stay safe during and after an earthquake. Without these items, students may face injuries or difficulty signaling for help in emergency situations.  

We cannot afford to be unprepared. That’s why we are urging school administrators and policymakers to take action. Every student should have a L.I.F.E. Bag as part of their earthquake preparedness kit. Schools must also implement earthquake readiness programs to teach students how to use their survival bags effectively. Additionally, schools should collaborate with organizations to provide affordable emergency kits, ensuring that no student is left behind due to financial constraints.
