Stop the Planning Authority from turning this beautiful townhouse into a car park

The Issue

The Gozo Ministry has filed an application to destroy a unique townhouse just outside the Citadel designed by the renowned 20th century architect Guze Damato to create a three storey parking instead.

This townhouse built in the 1950s has a uniquely crafted staircase, decorative columns and architraves which should be preserved. In effect, the building and its extensive grounds at the back should be turned into a boutique hotel which would compliment the revamped pedestrian access to the Citadel and therefore Gozitan tourism.

While it is acknowledged that the Citadel area lacks parking spaces, we appeal to the Gozo Ministry to seek other uses for this building instead of demolishing it in place of a car park (which would only attract more vehicles to the area!). A very plausible solution is a suitably located park and ride scheme which transports visitors to the Citadel by means of small electrical taxi cabs.

A strong general sentiment in Malta and Gozo in recent years is the unacceptable attitude towards unique Maltese architecture being demolished for modern urban sprawling. Sign the petition now and let this not be another missed opportunity to reverse damage to priceless architecture.
