Dear Supporter

Monday 5th April was the first anniversary of Belly Mujinga’s death.

Her family are still waiting for answers and for justice.

Thank you to everyone who joined a vigil, held a doorstep action, printed off a poster, or shared our posts on social media. Together we made sure that ITV, BBC, and Sky news, all marked the day. Additionally, the campaign was featured in the Guardian and in other media. The Telegraph also ran a feature on the vigil and our complaint against the BTP the day before.

Belly’s partner, Lusamba, along with their daughter, attended the vigil at Victoria station. I read out  a card Belly’s daughter had written for her mother. It was absolutely heartbreaking, and many tears were shed.

At 11.22am we held a minute’s silence to mark Belly’s death.

Lusamba told us afterwards how much the family felt supported on the day and how it gave strength to him and their daughter Ingrid, now 12 years of age.

I spoke about the vigil and recent developments to James O'Brien on LBC yesterday. There is footage of the interview online.

We have complained to the IOPC about the British Transport Police ("BTP") because the BTP have refused to give us the assailant's name so that we can sue him for the assault and harassment in the civil courts.

A year on, Belly’s family are still waiting for answers.

We demand:

The name of the man who attacked Belly Mujinga.

An inquest into Belly’s death.

A public inquiry into the death of Belly, which will determine among other things what, if any, culpability GTR had for her death.

Additionally, we have the following demands to ensure the avoidable events that led to the tragic death of Belly Mujinga aren’t repeated.

We demand:

Full support and protections for all frontline workers from Covid-19, including risk assessments that take into account the disproportionate risk faced by black, Asian and ethnic minority workers.

Health and safety reps to have access to every workplace, and an extension of union rights to recruit health and safety reps to protect workers.

An extension of the bereavement support scheme to all frontline workers.

In the coming weeks and months we will continue to need your support to demand justice for Belly Mujinga. Make sure you sign up to our social media accounts so we can keep you up to date:

You can follow me on Twitter at @LDaviesEJ for other updates and to watch Belly's last video which is pinned to my twitter feed and shows us a glimpse of how wonderful a person she was. Photos from the vigil also appear there.

Be well.
