The Issue
As a former resident deeply affected by the charged atmosphere in Flint, I am deeply distressed as I see my friends and close associates endangered by a riot promoted by Council President Ladel Lewis, Council Vice-President Candice Mushatt, Councilwoman Judy Priestly, and Mayor Sheldon Neeley at a City Council meeting. Trust in our civic institutions can only exist when officials act responsibly and with the public's best interest in mind.
Ladel Lewis, President of the Flint City Council, Vice-President Candice Mushatt, Councilwoman Judy Priestly, and Mayor Sheldon Neeley, have violated this trust through their actions. We demand that Governor Gretchen Whitmer initiates a process to consider the removal of Ladel Lewis, Candice Mushatt, and Judy Priestly from the City Council, due to this illicit encouragement of violence and chaos against the citizens they should be protecting.
In addition, we request the initiation of a formal investigation into Mayor Neeley's actions during his tenure, including potential campaign finance violations. It is a disheartening reality to face, but it is our duty as citizens to hold our leaders accountable and ensure they uphold the ethics and values that our society is built on. As an example for need of such investigation - in fiscal year 2020, there has been a reported 33% increase in complaints filed with the Federal Election Commission, suggesting a growing national concern about potential campaign finance violations (source: FEC's 2020 Annual Report). These campaign finance violation allegations can't be overlooked in Mayor Neeley's case.
