Governor Glenn Youngkin-LeRico Kearney Does Not Deserve To Die in Prison
The Issue
LeRico Kearney, is serving a life without parole sentence, the harshest imaginable punishment available in America. It screams a person is beyond hope, beyond redemption. It rips away any chance of reconciliation with society and gives no chance of fulfillment outside the prison walls. This is fundamentally a death sentence and should not be imposed on a person in their youth!
LeRico is serving a life plus 3 years sentence for a crime he DID NOT commit. Ever since his incarceration at the age of 18 years old, LeRico has maintained his innocence. Now age 45, he has a chance to regain his freedom if Governor Youngkin and the Secretary of the Commonwealth grants him clemency.
LeRico had three trials. The first, held in February 2000, acquitted him. The Virginia Court of Appeals overturned the second appeal. A third trial occurred on February 2003, and despite no evidence, he was sentenced to life in prison. His conviction was based primarily on the self-serving testimony of 3 jailhouse informants, all receiving time reductions for their testimony. DNA, fingerprints, and firearm analysis of the evidence from the scene DID NOT connect LeRico to the crime.
LeRico has served 28 years of his life sentence. LeRico has a positive outlook on life. He has missed out on so much, his children growing up, traveling, seeing the world, meeting new people, and building relationships.
"Life to me is more about family, integrity, and making a difference." - LeRico Kearney
LeRico was sentenced to die on the word of convicted men who all benefited from their testimony. LeRico is an outstanding person who is far from perfect, he does not deserve to die in prison.
Please help me urge Governor Youngkin to grant LeRico clemency. Please sign his petition and share it on all social media platforms!
Thank you in advance for your merciful consideration to help save LeRico's life!
