We send our children to school so they can learn—not so they can be arrested outside the building and taken away.

Last week, ICE agents arrested Marcelo Gomes Da Silva - a high school student in Milford, Massachusetts, right outside his school.

He arrived in the U.S. at just 6 years old from Brazil, has lived here for over a decade, and is now a senior preparing to graduate.

He has grown up in this country, gone to school in our communities, and done everything we ask of young people. Now he’s been torn from his life and placed in immigration detention.

We are Massachusetts parents, and we’re calling this what it is: a betrayal of our children.

Schools should be safe zones. No student should have to fear being taken by ICE while walking into class.
