Governor Green: Keep Hawai‘i Safe – Protect Gender-Affirming Healthcare Now

Hawai‘i has always been a beacon of aloha, inclusion, and safety. Now that spirit is being tested by a wave of anti-transgender laws across the country. If other states can punish people for being who they are or for helping loved ones get care, then all of our freedoms are in danger. We refuse to let Hawai‘i go down that path.

We are urging Governor Josh Green, M.D. to take immediate action to ensure that doctors and patients here can continue to make private medical decisions without fear. No parent should worry that their child can’t get the healthcare they need. No doctor or supporter in Hawai‘i should face legal threats for doing what’s right. We need an Executive Order that protects life-saving, evidence-based gender-affirming care in our state. This will guarantee that Hawai‘i remains a safe haven where personal health choices are respected.

Why This Matters to Everyone:

When one group’s rights are under attack, everyone’s rights are at risk. Protecting healthcare for transgender, non-binary, and māhū community members means protecting all of us – it keeps government out of our private medical decisions and preserves the aloha values of compassion and respect. The fight for transgender rights is a fight for bodily autonomy and privacy for every Hawai‘i resident. 

What We Urge Governor Green to Do Immediately:

✅ Defend Healthcare Providers and Patients: Direct state agencies to shield anyone providing or receiving gender-affirming care in Hawai‘i from penalties under other states’ anti-trans laws.

✅ Refuse Out-of-State Persecution: Prohibit the extradition of individuals (providers, parents, or youth) who are lawfully receiving or supporting gender-affirming care in Hawai‘i, even if another state seeks to charge them.

✅ No Cooperation with Hate: Ensure Hawai‘i agencies do not cooperate with out-of-state investigations or subpoenas intended to punish transgender healthcare.

✅ Coordinate State Protection: Require all state departments to work together to protect doctors, clinics, patients, and supporters of gender-affirming care.

✅ Encourage Healthcare Partners: Urge private hospitals and insurers in Hawai‘i to uphold confidentiality, resist any hateful legal demands, and continue providing coverage for gender-affirming treatments.

✅ Legal Support Fund: Establish a state-backed legal fund to defend our healthcare providers against harassment or lawsuits originating from states that have banned this care.

Hawai‘i has long stood for love, acceptance, and justice. We must act now to uphold those values. If we fail to lead, we risk letting outsiders dictate our rights and our future. Let’s show the country that Hawai‘i will always protect its people.
