The cornerstone of the Confederacy was slavery. Monuments that honor Americans who picked up arms against the United States and in defense of slavery are an insult to every African American, past and present. This monument, like many other Confederate monuments, was funded by the Daughters of the Confederacy, which promotes rewriting Civil War history. For over 100 years, this organization has worked to gain sympathy for slave owners and those who who supported slavery by placing monuments, renaming streets and highways, and promoting the “Lost Cause.” It is well past the time to remove this monument!
