Florida has worked hard to build a reputation for safe, secure, and transparent elections. Now, state lawmakers have taken another step toward strengthening that trust by passing legislation that requires proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.

This legislation simply reinforces a principle most Americans agree on: voting in U.S. elections should be reserved for U.S. citizens. The bill ensures that when someone registers to vote, they provide documentation confirming their citizenship—such as a birth certificate or passport. It also updates voter identification standards at polling places to rely on secure, verifiable forms of ID.

Supporters of the bill say these measures will strengthen confidence in our election system and help guarantee that every legitimate vote counts. In a time when many Americans feel uncertain about election security, Florida has the opportunity to lead the nation by demonstrating that strong safeguards and voter participation can go hand in hand.

This law also makes use of existing verification systems, such as Real ID–compliant identification and government databases, which most Floridians already have. The goal is not to prevent eligible citizens from voting—it is to ensure that elections remain fair, transparent, and trusted by voters across the political spectrum.
