In November, 2019, the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents (UH BOR) approved administrative rules that violate indigenous Hawaiian customary and traditional rights to access and practice on the Mauna Kea summits despite hundreds of testimonies in opposition. In August 2020, the UH BOR adopted an internal management structure for the "governance of lands" on Maunakea and plans to have a new "management plan" for Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea kia'i (protectors) are keeping a close watch on this.
Gordon Squires, the Vice President of External Affairs for the TMT International Observatory, announced that construction will probably not happen until sometime after spring or summer of 2021 due to the pandemic, winter weather, and other "factors". However, there are still a handful of kia'i stationed along the Mauna Kea Access Road that are keeping watch 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
