Exonerating Briston Smith would not only positively affect my family & I, it would also impact the community as well as The United States as a whole. My brother has always been the poster child; he won every award that I couldn’t in school, he was the star athlete in every sport he played, & He was always everyone’s favorite person to be around. Around the time he’d turned 18 he got caught up with the wrong crowd & was simply at the wrong place at a very wrong time. One of the guys he had been hanging out with had just got a gun, & was very eager to use it. The guy ended up shooting & killing a man by the name of Charles Holsey. Unfortunately since my brother (Briston) was at the scene, even without a murder weapon, he became apart of the “elaborate murder scheme.” B.j. was charged with Felony murder, which by the way is a rule so unjust that England abolished the rule in 1957; & 4 states in the US have since abolished this rule as well. Felony murder is a rule so cruel that the good ole USA is the only country in the world where it still exists. So not only am I making this petition for the immediate release of my brother, I’m making this petition for the abolishment of the felony murder rule as well. I bet you’re wondering what exactly the felony murder rule is, well it’s a rule where you can be charged with murder even without a murder weapon & without physically harming anyone. There are dozens of cases where people lose friends, & end up serving years & years of jail time for the death of their friend just because they were at the scene. This rule, is designed to keep the American prison systems full. So please help me bring a father home to his child, a child home to their parents, a grandchild home to their grandparents, an innocent man home to the world; and most importantly please help me get this disgustingly unjust law abolished from the criminal justice system.
