Government should provide £3.5bn to new West Surrey Council in debt crisis
Government should provide £3.5bn to new West Surrey Council in debt crisis
The Issue
The new unitary council of West Surrey will launch in 2027 effectively bankrupt as the most indebted UK council with a total debt of £4.5bn to £5bn, or over £7k per resident. The government have offered £500 million in debt relief, but this should be increased to £3.5bn to ensure financial viability.
The Labour government decided to form the new unitary council of West Surrey, so naturally it should include a working plan for financial viability. This is not the case, as the council will immediately start life in deep crisis with unsustainable levels of accumulated debt. Just servicing the interest on this debt will consume a significant portion of the council's tax payer funded budget. It is not fair on the citizens of West Surrey many of whom live in areas that did not contribute to this debt burden, or benefit from the historic levels of wasteful spending.
Save West Surrey Council from imminent collapse into special measures.
