End Animal Cruelty: Shut Down Marineland

The Issue

Marineland has monetized the mistreatment and abuse of marine animals for a number of years. The current legislation regarding captive marine life bans the future sale and breeding of orcas in Ontario; as such, Kiska the captive whale is facing severe isolation in her landlocked solitary pool at Marineland. Oftentimes, the whale is heard calling out for other orcas as she experiences high levels of distress. It is the distress of Kiska, and a number of other animals held captive at Marineland, that serves as a testament to the corporation’s lack of regard to any real standard of care.

Holding animals in unnatural environments for the sake of entertainment and profit constitutes as cruel treatment. From harbor seals going blind to dolphins losing their skin over poor water conditions, Marineland’s owner John Holer denies all accusations of mistreatment and has sued other whistleblowers.

At the moment, Senate has passed a bill that makes it illegal to possess whales or dolphins, but the bill does not affect animals that are already held in captivity. For animals like Kiska that yearn for company, she is forced to continue experiencing isolating psychological mistreatment. It is time to push for new legislation to protect animals like Kiska, while ensuring corporations like Marineland are put to an end. This is urgent: the power to put an end to Marineland is in YOUR hands.
