Public libraries in Nova Scotia are often the only means of using the internet for many people in Nova Scotia, especially those who are homeless and those living in poverty. It serves as a shelter, a way for many to get in out of the extreme temperatures and bad weather. Or a place they can easily access a washroom, as needed. For some, especially at-risk youth, the library is a refuge. Some even consider it their home because they spend so much time there. 

Public libraries are an educational resource to many, especially students and homeschoolers, and therefore, should be treated as such. Libraries are a resource for a quiet place to study or do homework, or internet and books to research for school projects. Libraries greatly contribute to literacy, which is essential. Elementary and high schools are open regardless of your vaccination status. Public libraries should be included in this category. 

Public libraries are also a resource for learning about and connecting with your culture or heritage. Nova Scotia has worked so hard to promote and provide education about Mi'kmaq and African Nova Scotian culture and heritage, as well as Gaelic and other cultures and heritages. Preventing access to public libraries will be taking a step back.

According to the Nova Scotia Provincial Library, "Public libraries encourage lifelong learning, promote literacy and foster the love of reading. They are meeting places that connect people and gateways to information for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. The work of the Provincial Library helps ensure Nova Scotians have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of essential library services."

PUBLIC LIBRARIES ARE AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE!!!

We call upon the Government of Nova Scotia, Premier Tim Houston, Dr. Strang, The Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Nova Scotia Provincial Library, and all public libraries in Nova Scotia, to recognize that public libraries are essential to many Nova Scotians, and therefore, mandating vaccination to access the public libraries is denying us, and especially the underprivileged, of an essential service. 

This petition was created to bring awareness to how essential public libraries are to Nova Scotians and why it is important to keep them accessible to all, including those who haven't been vaccinated. For those without phone or internet access at home, the library may be the only means of booking an appointment to get vaccinated.
