Petition to
Government of Jamaica

Why this petition matters

Started by James Taylor

Jamaicans at home and abroad have been calling for a referendum on Jamaica taking its rightful place as a truly independent nation. Source

  1. Prime Minister Andrew Holness in the run-up to the 2016 election promised to have his government revise the constitution to make Jamaica a republic. Source
  2. As with many things, we the people of this noble island, understand the complexities of Government, and how reform isn't just a one-step process. But the Holness Administration has taken absolutely no steps to make his promise a reality. Some would say the administration is stonewalling on the growing calls to ditch Windsor Castle.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness in defence of his gross inaction on this issue, has said that republicanism must be "borne of action" and that "they must not be empty symbolism". Source

We, the undersigned, believe that hosting the aforementioned "Royals" constitute Empty Symbolism and petition the government to postpone this visit and extend one once Jamaica becomes a republic.

We, the undersigned also demand immediate action be taken by the recently appointed Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs (Source), to layout plans on how our government will be structured once we become a republic.
