Will you please sign the petition to stop sled dog cruelty in Canada? Sled dogs are known to be tethered/chained and left unsupervised with bad housing and on short chains.
While the database on animal behavioral science grows and sled dog tourism increases in scale, necessary governance over the treatment of dogs has not kept up.
The animal cruelty section of Canada’s Criminal Code has gone virtually unchanged since 1892. Protections for dogs under The Alberta Animal Protection Act remain vague and outdated as the majority of responsible dog handling and ownership regulations are typically governed by municipalities.
This essentially leaves the welfare of dogs used for sledding ungoverned. While the City of Calgary, for example, prohibits dog owners from leaving dogs tethered while unsupervised, owners of sled dogs operating on public land have been known to keep hundreds of dogs chained for months at a time. This is certainly the case at Alberta’s commercial sled dog kennels.
We need your help to sign and be a voice for these sled dogs, and end their suffering! In this case, the petition aims to convince Canalta to remove these sled dog tours from their catalogue.
thank you!
Best regards, Chantal
ps this is not my petition but I am happy to support this important cause!
