Dear neighbors, On January 25th, the Miramar City Commission unanimously passed Resolution R6364 supporting House Bill 195 and Senate Bill 354 suggesting legislative changes to Sections 373.41492 and 552.30, Florida Statutes; urging the Florida Legislature and the Florida Governor to support House Bill 195 and Senate Bill 354: Construction Materials Mining Activities (Commissioner Yvette Colbourne). There were approximately 30 residents in attendance, the majority of which addressed the commissioners letting them know that they have a responsibility to help us. We concentrated on four requests: 1. We need our elected officials to be more vocal about this issue and use their position to get support from state legislators. 2. We need the resolution to be amended to include a Residents Committee. We are not receiving information from city officials regarding negotiations between the miners and the city. 3. We need the Miramar Commissioners to support the proposed legislation to lower the blasting limits from 0.5 to 0.1 PPV. 4. We need the City of Miramar to make this a standing item at every commission meeting. Although on its face this sounds like a modest win, when you view the video you will see that we have all the commissioners on the record stating that this is a long term problem for the city. That is an important win. Our elected official had never before acknowledged the problem publicly. We were also successful in getting unanimous approval from the commission to create a citizens committee so we can receive information from the city directly. Discussions on what type of vehicle to use to form the committee (Resolution vs Ordinance) will be held at the next commission meeting on Wednesday February 1, 2017 at 7 PM. Continued resident participation is incredibly important, please plan on attending, remember to wear RED.
