Remove maps to secret domestic violence shelters.

Over 80% of women who have experienced domestic violence are stalked by their abusers. Many of these victims rely on hidden shelters to find safety. These secret shelters are essential for keeping victims out of harm’s way. That’s why we are asking Google to help keep shelter addresses secret by removing them from their online listings.
My partner and I work at a domestic violence shelter. Every day, we meet people who have escaped abuse. It is crucial for them to feel safe at our shelter. Critical to that safety is the secrecy of shelter locations. Unfortunately, search engines like Google make it easy for perpetrators of domestic violence to find secret shelter addresses -- a quick “domestic violence shelter” Google search, and the addresses appear.
This is a problem many domestic violence organizations have been trying to solve. We can’t do it alone, and need Google’s help. Please join us in asking Google to automatically remove the addresses of domestic violence shelters from their map listings.
We do want those facing domestic violence to be able to find us. Instead of an address or online map location appearing when a domestic violence shelter is searched, we want the phone number to appear. All shelters are willing to pick up those in need. It’s a solution that ensures that shelters remain safe.
Shelters like the one I work at are often the only choice for victims. They don’t have the money and family support needed to break the cycle of violence. We are their lifeline to a life without fear.
Google is the world’s largest search engine. They have the resources to implement this solution. Please support our petition asking Google to automatically remove the addresses from domestic violence shelters.
