Global Peace Commitment
Global Peace Commitment
The Issue
We the undersigned state wholeheartedly, that peace is possible globally and that it is a good and necessary goal, which upholds a moral position based in truth, that all humans deserve peace.
Peace is a basic human right for all humans, no matter their nationality, race, colour, religion, gender, class, sexual orientation, physical ability, level of education, income or place in history.
We believe that there exists no point or action after which discussion is over and war is the only available course of action. We counter emphatically that any country, state, leader, company or individual who states that war is inevitable or must happen is wrong. And that any such entity must be resisted.
Currently the global military industrial complex is prioritising money and power over peace and planet. This is bad for the environment, for wildlife, the flora and fauna of our planet and bad for all human life on this planet. It must not be allowed to continue.
We believe that militarism and war are not essential or natural to humanity. There is another way and many cultures have already successfully demonstrated it. We the undersigned commit to delivering peace globally.
As part of our commitment we will work towards ensuring that no child shall need to take up arms, cower in fear of bombs dropping or develop psychological damage due to the atrocities of war.
In addition, we shall work towards ensuring that no adults need to fulfil national service duties or kill in the name of their countries, leaders or patriotism to their countries.
We recognise and acknowledge that killing others causes direct harm to those murdered, their families and communities but also to those wielding the weapon. No person should ever have to kill.
We the undersigned commit to:
- Pushing, in every way possible, for our nations to disarm and prioritise actions and talks that move towards peace immediately.
- Decommissioning any weapons of war we currently own and never buying any weapons of war in the future.
- Doing our own work to learn how we have been targeted by propaganda aimed at activating our anger, deepening our nationalism or patriotism and working to make us fear immigrants or anyone else deemed 'other' by people in positions of power and wealth.
- Take the time and make an effort to learn and practise how to have difficult, confrontational or emotionally challenging conversations peacefully with our family, friends and co-workers.
- Approach learning about other nations with an open mind and curiosity and an understanding that our previous education may have been biased and incomplete.
- Learn methods such as meditation, mindfulness and breathing so that we can develop and maintain peace in our own minds, even when we face challenging or triggering situations.
- Work to understand the intersectional systems, people and priorities that connect the global reliance on fossil fuels, colonisation, capitalism and the military industrial complex with the collapse of our ecosystems and refusals to engage in peace.
- Find ways to disengage and defund the military industrial complex. This might mean changing jobs, areas of study or making different purchase choices.
- Push our governments, companies and institutions to invest in the planet and the ingenuity and creativity of humans, not in further developing weapons of war or structures of surveillance and war.
- And finally, if our governments decide to engage in an acts of war or to contribute to, support or otherwise encourage violent acts against humans or the planet, we the undersigned commit to refusing to comply. We will be contentious objectors. We will resist.
We will not be complicit in causing further pain to the planet or humanity. We all have a right to peaceful lives and we refuse to pick up arms because incompetent polititans or corrupt leaders or businesses wish to control, colonise or profit at the expense of innocent lives and the health of our planet and all who live here. Do better!
To dream of world peace is not naïve, stupid or unrealistic. That is what the people with power and money and hate in their hearts would have us believe, but they are wrong. They do not have humanity's best interest at heart, only their own. And they are acting with incorrect and incomplete information.
We are humanity. As far as we know were are the smartest sentient beings in the universe. We have all the tools and skills we need. We just need to develop the belief and conviction in the goal, to listen to and learn from the indigenous and other peoples who understand how to live in peace, and to make the decision to put our vast intelligence and creativity into delivering this necessary and worthwhile goal.
We the undersigned stipulate that every human has a right to peace and we collectively commit to delivering that freedom to humanity.
