Fighting AntisemitismUnited States
Sep 23, 2024

The last few days have been filled with literary, Jewish-related news. We'd like to highlight it all, which should also give you an idea of what we're working on.

  1. To start with some good news, Elissa Wald very recently launched JUDITH, a new blog you might be interested in: "So I just launched JUDITH, a magazine of Jewish letters, arts & culture. It's part of the fierce fight I'm trying to mount on behalf of the Jewish writers who are being pushed out of the book world by anti-Semites right now. We will be promoting Jewish poets, fiction writers and essayists continually."

We naturally support the endeavor. Read JUDITH here.

  2. For those of you who haven't read, feminist writer Elisa Albert had an event canceled at the Albany Book Festival because two panelists pulled out once they realized Elisa (who's also an advocate for reproductive justice) is a Zionist, god forbid.

It's a real shame that these things keep happening, and it results in Jewish voices being barred from more and more spaces, and that's exactly why we're here to fight this.

Organizations like the festival find themselves at a loss when these things happen. They have to find alternatives to keep these events going. This is the second time (that we know of) in weeks that an event featuring a zionist participant gets canceled at the very last moment, leaving no room for scheduling an alternative.

You can read more about it here (including correspondence with the festival), and you're always welcome to support Elisa's work if you can.
  3. By now, we're sure you've all heard about the incident at the Diesel store in CA. The store was quick to respond and remove this very problematic book, as well as posting an apology.

Of course, this sparked (justified) outrage

We truly believe that a lot of the hurt out there is because people do not understand how problematic they're being due to ignorance. Considering this, and also the fact that the Diesel ownership recently changed, we've reached out to them to see what other improvements can be made at the store to make it both inclusive for all AND welcoming to our people. We will keep you posted.
  4. Lastly, Zibby's upcoming book, On Being Jewish Now, featuring post Oct. 7th essays from many Jewish writers, was featured in The Australian with a snippet from the book from Rachelle Unreich. She mentioned needing a bodyguard while attending a book festival. That's the reality of Jewish writers these days.

You can read more about it here
