Global Call to Action: Boycott Beef until the Amazon Fires End

The Issue

The Amazon Fires were intentionally set in order to make space for cattle ranching and soybean production primarily used for cattle feed. This petition is a Global Call to Action to boycott beef. Even if you are in a country that doesn’t export beef from Brazil or may feel like this boycott won’t make a difference, read below to see why this accessible action will help in the fight against climate disaster.

If you’re in the USA, Boycott Beef for Labor Day Weekend

While the USA stopped importing beef from Brazil in 2017 due to the rotten meat scandal, Trump released a joint statement with Bolsanaro in March discussing the desire to begin importing beef again. The recent deforestation is highly likely to meet the projected demand from the USA if these trade lines opened again, which based on their relationship, is only a matter of time.

Labor Day weekend is also the third highest day for beef consumption, right behind Fourth of July and Memorial Day. Going one year without eating beef saves approximately 3432 trees, which means you and each person at your BBQ would be saving roughly 30 trees by partaking in beef-free festivities. There’s power in our dollars: by sending a drastic message that even during celebratory times Americans are willing to make sacrifices to protect our climate, we will force the entire beef industry to reassess their production strategy.

Global Call to Action: Boycott Beef Until the Fires End

Brazil is currently not only leading, but breaking records on beef volume exports. If you live in Hong Kong (better yet, are already currently protesting) you’re in a position to create the most impact by incorporating a beef-free diet. Hong Kong represents 24% of beef shipped by Brazil, with China second in line at 22.63%.

Europe, you can help too: the European Union has increased their beef exports from Brazil, but as of August 23rd is open to banning Brazilian beef because of the rainforest fires. There’s an informal meeting in Helsinki scheduled on September 13th to discuss the ban further. By giving up beef now and putting pressure on your elected officials, you could be part of a historic shift towards change.

Countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt and Chile are also in the top percentage of Brazilian beef exports. And even if you live in a country that doesn’t export from Brazil, you are still affected. Deforestation also meets the demand for soybean production, which 70-75% is used to feed chicken, pigs, cows and farmed fish---an even better case to adopt a vegetarian diet altogether.

The Case for Boycotting Long Term

There are numerous studies on why cutting down beef consumption directly helps in the fight against climate change. Even by significantly cutting down your current beef consumption, you are part of a global movement in taking action towards saving our planet. When beef consumption goes down, the need to meet demand also goes down--the main source of deforestation all around the world, not just the Amazon.

Slave Labor is also used to cut down forests around the world, particularly in the Amazon. Deforestation is intricately linked to modern day slavery. By enforcing laws against slave labor we will not only end a human rights crisis, but also take huge strides towards reversing our climate crisis.

Your impact doesn’t have to end with sharing memes and articles

"The World's Lungs" being on fire impacts us all and our future generation. Regardless of your age, religion, race or background, you can participate in this call to action. Call your representatives and elected officials and tell them why you are boycotting. Inform your family of the boycott and ask them to make a pact to join you. Challenge your coworkers to implement a beef-free diet at home and in the workplace. This is one of the rare causes that connects us as a human species. Therefore by taking action, you are creating tangible global change by addressing the root cause of deforestation, the beef industry.
