Educate students on sexual violence and consent

The Issue

Dear Glendora, High Students, Staff, and Family I am Daniel Hall-Macias a student here at Glendora High. While attending Glendora I have noticed that sexual assault is a problem here on our campus. Multiple students have said that they have been a victim of such issues. I do believe that many of the students who cause such violence lack knowledge on simple things such as consent. Unfortunately, Glendora Schools seem to fail in the aspect of teaching its students what consent truly is and how to prevent sexual violence. In addition to that many students seem to not have is the proper knowledge of how to report these experiences. We may have many resources on campus but I do believe the school could majorly improve in things such as sexual harassment awareness and explain to its students that it is ok to report it to an adult and that they will not be neglected as many students do believe sexual violence is an issue here on our campus. So many may ask how we can fix this and how can we make Glendora High and all the other schools in the Glendora Unified School District a safer place for all students.

To begin with, as the title of this petition displays, I feel that the Glendora Unified School District should modify the current curriculum being taught in our sexual education classes. Yes, a small change like this can make a big difference to the students. I get that consent can be a pretty logical thing for all of us we all understand that when someone says no, they mean it, and just because a person does not say no does not mean it is ok for you to have sexual relations with that person. So how can we get every single person to understand this message, simple we start in a class that is required for every student to take here in order to graduate. Our health classes here at Glendora do a great job covering topics such as diet, the dangers of smoking and drinking, and much more, but from my experience, I seemed to have not learned much about consent. Yes, many students probably know what consent is but the issue here on our campus is that many just do not care or do not completely understand the message. I think just adding one day to the teacher’s curriculum where they explain what consent is and how ignoring consent is considered rape would be beneficial. Another addition to our school should be a sexual harassment awareness day. On this day I feel that it would be in the best interest that teachers have a discussion with students to see how they feel about the topic and let them know that they are a safe and trusted adult that the student can confide in when dealing with sexual harassment.

In conclusion, I’d like to end off by leaving a final message for all of those who are reading this. First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this I know it may not directly affect you, but this cause is very important and relevant. I would also like to send a final reminder that sexual violence can occur to anyone whether that’d be a female, male, non-binary, lgbtqia+, heterosexual, or any other way you’d like to put it. All of us students are at risk of this happening to us, so I am just trying to get your attention for ten seconds to help make a change. This could happen to us, your future kids, your siblings, anyone so we need to take a stand and put an end to sexual harassment here at Glendora High and all other Glendora Unified School District campuses.
