Make Glendale a Non-Toxic Space for Our Kids!

Glendale is a wonderful place to raise a family. We have wonderful schools and parks. However, many parents became alarmed recently when they found out that the herbicide (weedkiller) glyphosate more commonly known as RoundUp, is being sprayed where our children spend so much time - at those same schools and our parks. The state of California and the World Health Organization have both declared glyphosate a probable carcinogen. Dandelions and weeds do not pose a risk to our health - glyphosate does.

We immediately expressed our concerns to the Glendale Unified School District and applaud them for quickly discontinuing the use of glyphosate. We are now demanding the Community Services and Parks Department stop using glyphosate too. These chemicals are not safe for our growing kids, ourselves, or for the city employees who must handle these toxins. Of course, these chemicals also negatively affect our pets, plants, animals, and microorganisms in our soil as well. We encourage the use of non-toxic alternatives such as Avenger or vinegar, and offer to support the city in this transition however we can.

Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California voter initiative that requires the state to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm and must be updated a minimum at least annually. Since 1978, the list has grown to about 800 chemicals. Glyphosate was recently added to the list based on the 2015 finding by WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). That agency labeled glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic” based on reviews of selected past studies.
