Glen Eira City Councillors: Acquire the vacant land at 46 Regent Street, Elsternwick for creating a new local Open Space.

The issue

Glen Eira City Council recently released its Draft Open Space Strategy.  The purpose of the Strategy is to direct future planning, provision, design and management of open space in Glen Eira from 2013 to 2026.

The report identifies a high priority need to provide new local open space in the Elsternwick precinct to meet the needs of existing and future population growth.  The area, defined as Gap Area E1 generally includes Gordon St, Elizabeth St, Regent St, St. Georges Rd and the adjoining Liscard St, Long St, Villiers St, Allison Rd, Sandham St, Sinclair St and Staniland Grv.

Given there are very few potential new open space sites in the area, this presents a unique opportunity with respect to the vacant site at 46 Regent Street.

Creating a new local open space at 46 Regent Street will provide many benefits including:

- Enhanced livability and character of the area,

- Provide a place for local children to play,

- A place to relax and unwind and escape the built environment,

- Improve the sense of place, community health and wellbeing,

- It will end the uncertainty associated with any potential future development of the site.

It is in the best interests of all that Council should endeavour to acquire the site 46 Regent Street and create a new local open space.

It is essential that you provide feedback to the Councillors by Friday 13th December 2013 to demonstrate the importance of this open space opportunity and to encourage them to take action.
