So by now many people in Glastonbury will be aware that Boots the Pharmacists in Glastonbury High Street has been chosen by CEO Seb James to be closed. Boots is part of the US conglomerate Wallgreens and no doubt their interests, being born within the US Consumerist mentality, will not align completely with the reasons why Boots was set up and then flourished under the 1945 Labour Government's choice to form The National Health Service within their new concept of the Welfare State. For many years Boots flourished under the Welfare State but recently profits have gone down under a Conservative Government where privatisation is the order of the day - whether it works or not. No doubt Seb James has to turn a profit and one way of doing that is to cut costs rather than boost profits - as it will be analysed by Wallgreens that only consumerism rather than service works to generate profit. In fact a base line of income in fulfilling not only the past needs of the NHS through prescriptions but via all the opportunities of the deconstruction of the health service where you no longer see a doctor, but you can be issued with whatever the pharmacists may suggest. But also there will be more income from direct charges under the pharmacists recommendations. Plus: A good business plan that plugs into the specificities of the locale - by for instance stocking herbal remedies to take advantage of Glastonbury's forward thinking in this area. But that's for Boots to sort out. Meanwhile our job is to keep the patient alive and we need your signatures to show full support for the people working at Boots who seemed very sad to hear about the closure of their workplace. Pleas sign, please share this post. Please support the workers and also maintain our pharmacy in Glastonbury.
