Redevelop Barrachnie Skatepark

The Issue

Barrachnie skatepark has been left in a state of dilapidation for over a decade; with holes in the metal quarter pipe and a host of other issues. Not only is this entirely unsafe for those who wish to use the space, but is also an indication of skateboarding being treated as a second-class sporting concern.

In recent months, there has been a large increase of interest in skateboarding, with many people picking up the board for the first time. This is not only due to skating now being incorporated into the Olympics, but also because of an ever present cross-over between skate and popular culture.

With the increase in interest, comes more strain on the availability of skate-spots, with many other parks like Kelvingrove, Riverside and Kirkintilloch seeing a rise in beginner skateboarders. This in itself wouldn't be an issue, if these skateboarders could distribute themselves closer to their own residences. However, parks like Barrachnie, as has been mentioned before, have been left to fall into disrepair, making them extremely unappealing and down-right unattractive even from a public perspective.

We're asking Glasgow City Council, and the councillors for Barrachnie, to re-develop the skatepark; making it safer, larger and better equipped with street and transition obstacles and lights, so those who wish to skate at night, can do so with peace of mind.

Re-developing the park is beneficial in many ways; it provides a safe space for those who wish to practice this sport, it provides health benefits for those who utilise the space, it brings economic benefits by ensuring that those who would travel elsewhere would now remain local and will also attract others from afar who wish to use the space too, engaging them in local economic activity.
