The final Glacier National Park Air Tour Management Plan ensures a complete phase out of commercial overflights by 12/31/29, or through attrition, whichever occurs first.
- According to the Record of Decision, the rationale for the 2029 end date “was selected because it will enable the NPS to accomplish its management objective within thirty years of the issuance of the General Management Plan.”
- This end date was the result of comment letters that pointed out “natural attrition” can be avoided in perpetuity if an operator is a corporation. Thanks especially to NPS staff and leadership – this was achieved in the 11th hour.
- The Park administration is committed to improving management of internal overflights too.
Thank you for all your letters, comments and articles in the Quiet!Glacier efforts to help Glacier National Park regain quiet(er) skies and protect the natural sounds natural resource – IT MADE A DIFFERENCE!

About ATMP: Glacier is one of 24 National Parks required to complete the ATMP by the U.S. D.C. Court of Appeals in a Petition for Writ of Mandamus filed by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) and the Hawaii Coalition Malama Pono in its first form in 2017. Thanks to the herculean efforts of PEER, the remaining Parks are in various stages of the process. You can find detail on each of the other Parks here. Many have a very long way to go.
