Give Waldhof Its Hall Back: KPDSB Must Transfer Ownership to the Community

Give Waldhof Its Hall Back: KPDSB Must Transfer Ownership to the Community
The Issue
The hamlet of Waldhof, Ontario is a small, tight-knit community. Like many rural communities, its hall is its heart; the place where neighbours gather, families celebrate, and community life happens. For generations, the people of Waldhof have treated it as their own: they insured it, paid the utilities, scheduled every event, and handled every repair.
Then they discovered they didn't actually own it.
The hall legally belongs to the Keewatin Patricia District School Board—a bureaucratic inheritance the Board itself didn't even know about until the community brought it to their attention.
In 2022, the Waldhof Ladies Guild set out to make some much-needed upgrades to the building. Wanting to do things properly, they contacted the KPDSB and asked them to sell the hall to the community for $1—a symbolic transfer of ownership to the people who had been caring for it all along.
Instead of a quick handshake and a token dollar, what followed was four years of bureaucratic delay. Meeting requests unanswered. Correspondence that went nowhere. A school board that has shown no urgency whatsoever about returning a community hall to the community that owns it in every meaningful sense.
The people of Waldhof are patient and they have continued to maintain the hall, continued to hold their events, continued to be good stewards of a building they were told—implicitly, for decades—was theirs. But patience has limits.
We are calling on the KPDSB to immediately transfer ownership of Waldhof Community Hall to the Waldhof community.
This is not a complicated ask. The Board has no educational use for this building. It has not maintained it, the community has. The $1 sale price the community proposed asks nothing of the Board except that they do the right thing.
We are also calling on our Member of Provincial Parliament to apply pressure on the school board to act. Rural communities like Waldhof deserve the same responsiveness from public institutions that larger communities take for granted.
Sign this petition to tell the KPDSB: stop stalling. Give Waldhof its hall back.
