"Give Us a Brake – Extend Theory Test Validity to 4 Years!" Fix the Driving Test Crisis

The Issue

Learner drivers across the UK are being unfairly penalised — not for delays of their own making, but because of a broken system.

Many of us pass the theory test, only to wait months for a practical test — often due to cancellations or no available slots. If we don’t pass the practical within 2 years, we’re forced to retake the theory test, adding more stress, cost, and delay.

But here’s the truth:

Most people don’t fail because they don’t know the theory.

They fail because the long wait times between tests make it hard to stay prepared. Without a car to practise in and with lessons costing £35–£40 each, many can’t afford the extra lessons needed just to stay confident behind the wheel.

I passed my theory test in July 2024 and booked a practical for November — it was cancelled and pushed to February 2025. I didn’t pass. The next test available was months away, and I had to keep paying for lessons I couldn’t afford.

This is the reality for thousands of learners.

We are calling on the DVSA and the UK Government to:

Extend the theory test validity from 2 years to 4 years

Drastically increase practical test availability by hiring more examiners and opening more test slots

This is not just about convenience — it’s about fairness, access, and mental wellbeing.

Let learner drivers move forward, not start over.

Learner drivers are being punished for a system that’s failing them. This isn't just inconvenient — it's unfair, costly, and mentally exhausting.
