Give U.S. Facebook users the right to lock their profiles
The Issue
In many countries, Facebook users have access to a powerful privacy feature called Profile Locking. In the United States, we don’t.
This feature gives users meaningful control over their digital safety, yet it remains unavailable to millions of Americans—despite growing concerns about stalking, harassment, identity misuse, and data exploitation.
Profile Locking dramatically limits what strangers can see or do on your Facebook profile. When enabled, it provides protections such as:
- Only friends can see full-size profile and cover photos
- Profile photos and banners cannot be downloaded or shared
- Timeline posts and photos are visible to friends only
- Past posts are automatically restricted
- Story sharing and profile interactions are limited to friends
- Profile information is shielded from public scraping and misuse
- Tagging and face recognition exposure is reduced
These protections are especially critical for:
- Women and minors
- Victims of stalking or harassment
- Public-facing professionals
- Anyone concerned about identity theft or data scraping
U.S. users deserve the same privacy protections already available elsewhere. There is no clear justification for why Americans are excluded from a feature that directly improves safety and personal autonomy.
This petition calls on lawmakers to:
- Demand transparency from Meta on why this feature is withheld in the U.S.
- Advocate for equal access to privacy protections for American users
- Treat digital privacy as a consumer right—not a regional privilege
Privacy should not depend on geography.
Sign this petition to help bring this issue to Congress and push for equal digital protections for all U.S. Facebook users.
