Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris), one of six existing species of ‘river dolphins’, is categorized as a Critically Endangered Species by the IUCN. This freshwater dolphin is found in three rivers in South and Southeast Asia: the Ayeyarwady (Myanmar), the Mahakam (Indonesia) and the Mekong (Cambodia). The Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin symbolizes the magnificence of the Mekong River. Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins were once found throughout the river from the Lao-Cambodia border down the Mekong to the delta in Vietnam and in Tonle Sap. The 2020 survey resulted in an estimate of only about 89 adult individuals, still present in a 180 km stretch of the Mekong river in Cambodia. During the dry season from January to May when water levels fall, the population is concentrated in eight deep water pools in a 180 km stretch of the Mekong north of Kratie to Stueng Treng Provinces. The Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphins have faced mounting threats for decades. Major known threats to survival of the Dolphin included drowning in gill-nets, disruptions to river flow from upstream dams, overfishing, and use of damaging fishing practices such as electrofishing.
The river’s Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins are regarded as a “National Living Treasure” by Cambodian people. Cambodian people believe that where there are dolphins, there are fish. The Mekong river is home to the critically endangered Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin. The Mekong river’s biodiversity and ecosystems support sustainable agriculture & fisheries upon which millions depend for livelihoods, food & economic development. Free-flowing Mekong is critical to ensure these long term benefits and the survival of the remaining dolphins.
