Give the Nuclear Veterans their medals before it’s too late

The Issue

Around 22,000 servicemen, and thousands more scientists and civilians, took part in the UK's nuclear weapons trials from 1952 to 1967. Huge numbers of these people report a legacy of cancers, blood conditions, miscarriages, and birth defects in their children.

Fewer than 1,500 of these servicemen are still alive.

Last year, the Government finally agreed to seek approval of the King for a medal to recognise the service and sacrifice of these brave individuals. They were promised their medals by Summer, but now the Government is dragging its feet and the medals might not be delivered until November 22 - after Remembrance Sunday

The Government needs to fulfill the promise it made to these veterans before it’s too late. This year’s Cenotaph parade will include the largest-ever contingent of nuclear veterans, and after all they have been through, all they desperately want the chance to parade, with honour, wearing their medal.

The average age of survivors is 85. For some, this year’s Remembrance Parade might be their last chance. Join us in demanding dignity and respect for our Nuclear Veterans.

To make this happen, we need Defence Secretary Ben Wallace to:

  • Order the MoD medal office to speed up production this summer
  • Help the Office of Veterans Affairs organise a ceremony attended by the King to deliver it by October
  • And make sure he's in a position to look these veterans in the eye when they march past him on Remembrance Sunday

Please sign our petition to send the Defence Secretary a clear message - this cannot wait!
