Give Tarzan's Meriem More Major Roles Like Her Own Novel, Comic, Etc!!!
The Issue
Jeanne Jaccot, AKA, Meriem is a character from the Tarzan franchise who first appeared in the novel "The Son of Tarzan" by Edgar Rice Burroughs. She's a character who I deeply admire. She's an amazing character just like Tarzan and Jane! But unfortunately, she has been left out of the franchise extremely often. Here's a brief summary of her story:
(Spoiler Alert!)
In the novel, Meriem is under the care of the terrible Sheik until Tarzan's son Korak/Jack (who got separated from his parents) rescues her and takes her deep into the jungle to live with her. Several years pass and Meriem grows up to be a very skilled jungle warrior just like Korak. He starts to have feelings for her but she doesn't realize it yet. Then Meriem gets captured by these people who are associated with the Sheik until this man rescues her and takes her back to live in his African bungalow with his wife where they decide to adopt her. To make a long story short, after several things happen, Korak and Meriem get rescued by Tarzan and Jane who happened to be the same man and woman who took in Meriem in the first place. After a very emotional reunion, Korak and Meriem get married and head back to London to Greystoke Manor. While there, it's revealed that Meriem’s real name is Jeanne Jaccot and is the daughter of the French soldier Armond Jaccot who just so happens to know Tarzan/John Clayton. Meriem/Jeanne also appeared in the novel ‘Tarzan and the Ant Men’ along with Korak but they both didn't have an important role. They were only in the beginning and end. Meriem never appeared in any more of the original Tarzan novels after that.
After the original novel, Meriem has been featured in the black and white silent movie adaptation of ‘The Son of Tarzan’ which was quite forgotten and is currently the only Tarzan movie to feature this character. She also appeared in several issues of this forgotten comic series called Korak: Son of Tarzan. But after that, she didn't make any more appearances for a really long time.
However, there might be hope for this character. She finally made a comeback in the ERB novel “Tarzan: Greystoke Legacy Under Siege” where she’s one of the main characters. (Actually, I myself haven't read this novel yet so I don't know how big her role is.) She also made an appearance in the ERB crossover graphic novel ‘The Greatest Adventure’ which features other characters from the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ franchises teaming up with the Tarzan clan. (I haven't read this one yet either.) And finally, ERB inc. came out with one of their newest novels called ‘Korak At The Earth’s Core' which is the first one to star Tarzan's son Korak since the original Novel ‘The Son of Tarzan’ which came out over a century ago! Not only that, but his wife Meriem appears in this one too. From what I read from the description, she really is one of the main heroes this time! However, I haven't read the novel yet so I don't know if she's actually a jungle girl again like in "The Son of Tarzan" novel.
Also, Sony recently announced that they have a new Tarzan movie in the works which will supposedly be a more modern take on the legendary character. Not only that but they also have a new anime TV series in the works called "Korak the Killer: Legacy of the Wild." Both of these are wonderful opportunities to include Meriem!!
Meriem is an amazing Tarzan character who definitely deserves more recognition! She actually became a jungle heroine before Jane did later on. Not only that, but Meriem was also the archetype of the whole "jungle girl" concept!!
Since they recently brought her back in some of the newest ERB works, I started to have renewed hope for her. She also needs to be in more movie and TV show adaptations since "The Son of Tarzan" movie from 1920 is currently the only movie adaptation to feature her.
Not only does she deserve to be in the franchise more often, but should also get her own novel or comic too possibly! Her husband Korak got both of them like I mentioned before. Also, Jane got her own novel called ‘Jane: The Woman Who Loved Tarzan’ by Robin Maxwell and was recently given her own online comic strip called ‘Jane Porter Untamed.’ I truly believe it's Meriem's turn to be in the spotlight! She has so much potential just like the rest of the Tarzan clan! Also, it would be amazing if they gave Jane and Meriem a jungle adventure together. That would be very interesting to see! A mother-in-law/daughter-in-law jungle adventure!!
I truly believe it's about time that ERB inc. gives Tarzan's amazing daughter-in-law Meriem the spotlight she truly deserves! Please sign, support and share this petition if you also agree on all this!
