GIVE STUDENTS FAIR CHANCE TO SUCCEED: Reduce TOEFL fees for international students
The Issue
As an international student myself, I've experienced first-hand the financial strain imposed by continually rising TOEFL fees. Education should reward ability and qualifications—not the ability to pay hundreds of dollars for another attempt at a language test. Yet, each year, TOEFL becomes more expensive, and for many international students who must retake the test to meet their academic goals, this financial burden can become overwhelmingly prohibitive.
The TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a critical requirement for international students aspiring to study in English-speaking countries. But with fees ranging from $180 to $300 USD, and an additional cost for retakes, the expense can quickly escalate. For students from developing countries, these fees may constitute several months' worth of income, essentially placing their dreams out of reach due to economic barriers.
Education should be an accessible ladder to success, not a barrier. Students should have the opportunity to retake the TOEFL to improve their scores without the stress of financial hardship. This issue affects countless students who have the talent and drive to succeed but find themselves hindered by fees that soar disproportionately compared to their home country's living standards.
Consider the ripple effect of a high TOEFL fee: students who may have had profound impacts in their fields of study or professions are barred from opportunities because they cannot afford to prove their language proficiency. We need to change this, ensuring that education and academic success are built on knowledge and skill, not on the ability to pay.
We urge the authorities at Educational Testing Service (ETS) to recognize this pressing issue and take action to lower TOEFL fees. By doing so, ETS can open doors for international students to achieve their academic aspirations and contribute globally.
Join us in advocating for what is right. Sign this petition to demand a reduction in TOEFL fees. Together, we can create a fairer, more equitable system where education is truly accessible to all.
