Give Sicily Its Voice Back: Add Sicilian to Language Apps

Give Sicily Its Voice Back: Add Sicilian to Language Apps
The Issue
I grew up hearing fragments of a language that felt like music — Sicilian. My grandparents spoke it with pride, but as years passed, those words began to fade. Now, I’m fighting to keep them alive.
Sicilian isn’t just a dialect — it’s one of the world’s oldest Romance languages, shaped by Greek, Arabic, Latin, Norman, and Spanish influences. It carries the story of survival — spoken by families who refused to let their culture disappear. Yet today, it’s rarely taught and nearly invisible on the global stage.
I’m starting this petition because Sicilian deserves recognition, respect, and revival.
Languages like Irish, Hawaiian, and Welsh have found new life through platforms like Duolingo and Pimsleur — proof that technology can preserve heritage. So why not Sicilian?
Every Sicilian family carries a story in this language — stories told at kitchen tables, in songs, in prayers, and in memories passed from grandparents to grandchildren. But those stories risk dying in silence if younger generations never learn the words to tell them.
Adding Sicilian to Duolingo and Pimsleur would mean more than a new course — it would mean giving millions of people a way to reconnect with their roots. It would show that our heritage matters, that our identity isn’t forgotten, and that cultural preservation belongs in the digital age.
I’m asking Duolingo and Pimsleur to recognize the Sicilian language and add it to their learning platforms. Together, we can help protect one of the world’s most expressive and historic languages for generations to come.
Please sign and share this petition with your family, friends, and anyone who’s ever called Sicily home — even from afar. Let’s remind the world that Sicilian isn’t just history — it’s still alive.
I’m a proud Sicilian-American dedicated to preserving our ancestral language and culture. This isn’t just about words — it’s about identity, memory, and pride. Every signature helps ensure Sicilian lives on for future generations.
