Give Patients with Refractory Illnesses Early Access to drugs awaiting FDA Approval
The Issue
My Dad, a 9/11 first responder while he was in the National Guard, has been in a battle with acute myeloid leukemia (which is linked to 9/11 first responders after being told the air was safe to breath on September 11th 2001) since April of 2023 and it has been a brutal fight to say the least.
I have remained as positive as I possibly can. Because of his type of AML (inv 3), it has been an uphill battle to get him a bone marrow transplant.
The drug Iomab-B enables somebody like him who is struggling to get to remission, a bone marrow transplant, which can be a game changer for his prognosis. His team of Oncologists at Memorial Sloan Kettering all said the drug Iomab-B would be his best option for treatment.
However, the drug has recently finished clinical trials and is awaiting FDA approval. FDA approval can take years, and it is driving me crazy to think there is something out there that can help him, but because of an archaic process he can’t get the treatment.
I am sure his story is like many others, thats why this petition serves to give all those with refractory illnesses, like my fathers, more options of treatment instead of being told there is nothing more that can be done for them.
My Dad answered on 9/11 to help the government and the country, now the government has to loosen some regulations to help, something I believe could of been avoided if they were honest about the air quality on that day, him and others.
Time is critical in many illnesses, AML in particular, act now and sign to help all people in these dire circumstances to give them more of a chance of living a longer and healthier life.
