The Issue

Who we are
We are Polestar 3 owners and reservation holders who believed in Polestar’s vision of a modern, software‑defined, premium EV. Many of us committed early, before cars were widely available for test drives or reviews, trusting that the brand would continuously improve the user experience for all customers wherever technically feasible.

What changed
With the refreshed Polestar 3 (often referred to as MY27), Polestar has introduced a revised steering wheel that:

  • Rearranges the steering‑wheel buttons for clearer, more intuitive operation
  • Adds backlit button symbols for better visibility in low light
  • Enables additional steering‑wheel functions intended to improve day‑to‑day usability and reduce distraction

These changes have been highlighted in Polestar’s own press materials, imagery, and configurator for the updated Polestar 3.

In response to direct owner enquiries, Polestar has advised that:

  • The enhanced steering‑wheel layout and backlit controls are tied to new MY27 hardware
  • These features will not be enabled on existing MY24–26 cars via over‑the‑air (OTA) software updates
  • No hardware retrofit (free or paid) is currently planned for existing owners

In other words: early Polestar 3 customers are being told there is no path at all to obtain these improvements.

Why this matters
These changes are not just cosmetic tweaks. They materially affect how drivers interact with key functions while on the move:

  • A clearer, more consistent control layout can reduce cognitive load and distraction
  • Backlit symbols improve night‑time visibility and usability
  • Additional steering‑wheel functions reduce the need to reach for the centre screen while driving

In short, this is about everyday safety, ergonomics and usability — not merely styling differences between model years.

This is especially frustrating because the Volvo EX90, which shares the same SPA2 platform as the Polestar 3, launched with a more capable steering‑wheel control layout from day one. That strongly suggests the broader platform is capable of supporting these functions, making it difficult to accept that Polestar 3 MY24–26 vehicles are simply “incapable”.

Many of us chose Polestar specifically for its promised “software‑defined” approach and history of rolling out meaningful OTA updates. Being told that there will be no software improvements for steering‑wheel controls and no retrofit option risks sending a discouraging message to early adopters who backed the brand from the start.

What we are asking for
We are not demanding that every detail of the MY27 hardware be replicated on older cars. We are asking Polestar to:

  • Commit to exploring software‑only improvements to steering‑wheel functionality on Polestar 3 MY24–26, within the constraints of the existing hardware, even if the full MY27 feature set cannot be matched.
  • Offer a clear, optional hardware upgrade path – even as a paid retrofit – for customers who wish to bring their cars in line with the MY27 steering‑wheel interface and backlit controls.
  • Provide a transparent technical explanation if any of the above is truly impossible, especially in light of the shared SPA2 platform with the Volvo EX90, so that owners can understand the real constraints rather than being told only that earlier cars “do not have the capacity”.

We believe these are reasonable requests that respect both the technical realities of automotive engineering and the legitimate expectations of early customers.

What signing this petition will do

By signing, you will help:

  • Show Polestar Global that there is significant, organised customer interest in an upgrade path
  • Encourage internal escalation of this issue to product management, UX/HMI teams and senior leadership
  • Demonstrate that supporting early adopters with meaningful, safety‑relevant improvements is both the right thing to do and good for the long‑term health of the brand

We are not here to attack Polestar; many of us love our cars and continue to recommend them. We are asking Polestar to live up to its own vision of continuous improvement, and to treat early customers as long‑term partners instead of a generation to be left behind.

Call to action
If you own or are considering a Polestar 3 – or if you care about how EV manufacturers treat their early adopters – please add your name to this petition and share it in owner groups, forums and social channels.

Polestar, please:

  • Support your early customers.
  • Deliver steering‑wheel usability and safety improvements to MY24–26 Polestar 3 owners.
  • Show that “software‑defined” really applies across the fleet.
